Fun Facts About Amorgos

  • Chora is one of Greece’s most charming island capitals, bursting with character! Wander through its picturesque alleys, admire the lovely fountains, and soak up the beauty of the quaint churches that seem to pop up around every corner. History buffs will love the ancient architecture and the fascinating treasures in the Amorgos Archaeological Collection. It’s the perfect blend of beauty and history!

  • Also in the charming village of Chora are the ruins of a Venetian castle, built by Leremias Gizis back in 1290. While there isn’t much left to explore, the real treasure is the breathtaking view of the island from the top! Getting there involves a bit of a climb up a 210ft rock, but trust me—the stunning scenery makes it totally worth it!

  • Mouros is a must-visit beach! Located just 15km southeast of Chora, it’s famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and incredible underwater caves to explore snorkeling. This small pebbled beach is surrounded by stunning rock formations and while there aren’t many tourist facilities, a cozy beachside taverna serves cold drinks and snacks all day long.

  • Just like most Greek islands, Amorgos knows how to celebrate in style! The island’s religious feasts and local festivals are a vibrant part of its culture, filled with lively traditional music, dancing, and, of course, plenty of delicious food. And don’t forget the local wine and raki—because no Amorgos celebration is complete without them! But the real party? That’s got to be the Psimeni Raki festival! This lively celebration is all about endless live music and local raki flowing well into the night. It usually kicks off in late July or early August, so get ready for a night to remember!
