From Rugged Charm to Billionaire's Paradise

Once known for its lack of running water and unpaved roads, Canouan, a petite five-square-mile island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has undergone a remarkable transformation into a sanctuary for the ultra-wealthy. Often hailed as a "place where billionaires go to escape millionaires," this hidden gem has transitioned from tallying more tortoises than humans to boasting a runway for private jets, luxurious hotels and villas, and a multimillion-dollar marina catering to mega yachts.

Situated below the hurricane belt, Canouan is rarely troubled by storms, allowing for construction in precarious locations with unparalleled views. The island's evolution from rustic simplicity to opulent grandeur is exemplified by Scruffy's, a local spot where patrons of all wealth levels mingle, daring to indulge in the island's signature cocktail, the Canouan Crazy, crafted with a secret recipe, laced with vodka and rum.

Natural Wonders and Island Exploration

Canouan's allure extends beyond its man-made extravagance. A hike to its highest peak, Mount Royal, rewards visitors with sweeping views of lush forests meeting white-sand beaches.

The island's small size, navigable by golf carts rather than cars, adds to its charm, and the omnipresent Red-footed tortoises, after which the island is named (Canouan means "island of tortoises" in local dialect), leisurely roam the roads, adding to the idyllic atmosphere.

A Turbulent Past and a Luxurious Present

Canouan's journey to becoming a sought-after destination for the world's wealthiest has not been without its challenges. Earlier attempts, including a Trump casino, a Raffles-branded resort, and a Jim Fazio-designed golf course, faltered due to insufficient infrastructure.

However, recent developments, such as the extension of the airport runway to accommodate larger private jets, have paved the way for a more accessible Canouan.

Dermot Desmond's investment in the Sandy Lane Marina, boasting 120 slips for yachts up to 330 feet, has also elevated Canouan's status.

The marina, situated next to the airport, has become a pivotal element in attracting the attention of the one percenters. With private jets landing and mega yachts docking, Canouan is solidifying its position as a premier destination in the luxury Caribbean landscape.

As Canouan continues to redefine luxury in the Caribbean, from private jet runways to secluded marinas, the island beckons those seeking a secluded paradise where the lap of luxury meets the rhythmic waves of the Caribbean Sea.
